After a tough start to the week, the Exeter-Milligan-Friend volleyball team had a better day at the Bertrand Invitational Sept. 28.

EMF started with a five-set battle at Sutton Sept. 24 and fell short 25-15, 25-17, 16-25, 23-25, 15-11. Coach Madalynn Fousek said the Bobcats committed too many errors, and that was hard to overcome.

“I’m proud of the way we fought,” she said.

Kaydence Haase paced the offense with 14 kills and seven ace serves. Taylin Schluter picked up 13 digs.

Against Diller-Odell Sept. 26, the Bobcats lost 25-21, 25-15, 25-14. Fousek said DO didn’t do anything wrong in the match, while EMF wasn’t ready to play.

Haase notched 12 kills for the Bobcats.

EMF went 2-1 at Bertrand, beating Sandhills/Thedford 25-14, 25-16 and Loomis 28-30, 25-20, 25-21 before losing to Kenesaw 25-11, 25-21 in the championship match.

“We were able to serve and pass well and took care of business” against ST, Fousek said. The team lost the first game to Loomis but were able to get back on track in game two, she said.

Kenesaw was a quicker team, and the Bobcats didn’t handle that well, Fousek said.

Haase finished the day with 32 kills to lead the EMF offense. Lily Jeffries notched 34 assists, with Reese Tuttle adding 28.

EMF played Tri County Sept. 30 in another five-set marathon and lost 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-8. The Bobcats (8-7) defeated Osceola 22-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-9 Oct. 1 and travel to Johnson County Central Saturday, Oct. 5, for a tournament.

“We hope to rise to the challenge,” Fousek said.
