Newspaper group awarded 60 awards by Press Association Contest

The Crete News brought home 14 awards at the Nebraska Press Association’s annual convention and Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet April 27 in Lincoln.
Along with its sister papers, the Seward County independent, Milford Times, Wilber Republican and Friend Sentinel, the papers earned a total of 60 honors, including two sweepstakes awards, two General Excellence awards and a Photo of the Year.

Wilber Floral and Company completes grand opening

Wilber’s flower shop scene is back in full bloom just in time for spring. Chelsey Myers opened Wilber Floral and Company at the beginning of the month and said she is grateful for all of the local support she has received thus far, especially at her grand opening on April 20. In addition to flowers, she sells gift items, tuxes, dishware and more. Hear more about Myers and the Wilber Floral company in this week’s issue of the Wilber Republican.

Friend Learning Center set to receive $10,000 donation May 2

The Friend Learning Center, a project to help address the childcare crisis in the Friend and surrounding area, is set to receive a $10,000 donation on May 2. The donation will be coming from Shirley Rohrig and her late husband Gene. Rohrig will present the check at Friend Community Healthcare System, the local hospital, at 11 a.m.
Friend Community Healthcare System has been identified as a potential site for the Friend Learning Center by their task force partnership with Communities for Kids (C4K).

Nominations sought for Czech Festival awards - Deadline May 1

Now is the time to remember volunteers who contribute to the success of the annual Wilber Czech Festival.
The Nebraska Czechs of Wilber honor people who have, by their contributions or efforts, contributed significantly to the preservation, enhancement or development of the Czech heritage with the Knights of Blanik and Ladies of Libuse community awards.

The recipient may or may not be of Czech descent and may or may not be a resident of Wilber or Nebraska. Since the awards were developed in 1969, 514 people have been honored with these awards.
Nominations for 2024 are currently being accepted. Submissions should include a short resume about the efforts of the individual being nominated. All nominations must be dated and signed to be considered. The 2024 deadline is May 1, 2024.

Friend Historical Society sponsoring children's theater camp

The Friend Historical Society-San Carlo room is sponsoring the Theater Arts For Kids camp June 3-7 from 9:30-3:30. Due to the sponsorship the registration fee has been reduced to $50 and scholarships from the society are available. The musical theater day camp is for ages 7-15 and will conclude on Friday with a performance of Fairy Tale Forest. For more information and to register visit TAFK.org.

Kentucky Derby luncheon May 4 in Friend

A Kentucky Derby fundraising luncheon will be held May 4 at 11 a.m. at the San Carlo Room in Friend. This is a joint fundraiser for the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store (HATS) and the Friend Historical Society. Attendees are encouraged to wear a hat/bonnet and attend to enjoy mint juleps, a Derby lunch, and style shop by Cumberlands Style Shop. Each will draw for a horse upon arrival. Those who have the horse name which wins the actual race will receive a prize. Proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction held throughout the event will benefit both organization's projects. Admission is $30.

Crete moves past first round

The Crete boys’ soccer team defeated Norris 7-0 in the first round of the B5 subdistrict tournament on April 29. Crete will play Lincoln Northwest tonight at Doane at 8 p.m. for a spot in a district final.

Late rally not enough for CM

The Crete-Milford baseball team couldn't dig out of an early hole against Hastings yesterday, losing to the Tigers 6-4. Hastings scored three in the first, and while CM cut into the lead, it wasn't able to come all the way back. Jamie Ramos was 2-3 and scored two runs. CM will next be in action May 2 in the first round of the postseason.

Conference track today

Crete will host the Central Conference track meet today beginning at 10 a.m. at Doane University. Seward is among the teams in the conference. It's the last meet for both teams before districts, which are Tuesday, May 7, at Norris.
