Doane students create bilingual wildlife coloring book

Doane University professors and students in art, Spanish and graphic design classes are working together to create a wildlife coloring book. The wildlife on the coloring pages will be labeled in Spanish, and project leader Russ Souchek said he is looking forward to helping kids and families learn the words for wildlife in both languages and encouraging people to get outdoors. Voter registration deadline May 3

Friday, May 3, is the deadline for voters to register in person for the upcoming election.

Board of commissioners seat contested race in Saline County

The District #3 Board of Commissioners seat, currently held by Marvin Kohout, will be on the primary election ballot on May 14. The five candidates Lumir Kotas, Sarah Wenz, Edward Slama, Ray Rohrig and Gary Veprovsky have each been contacted by the newspaper to complete a candidate survey. Responses will be shared in next week's editions of The Crete News and Friend Sentinel.

Put On Your Dancing Shoes (POYDS) recital Saturday, May 4

The Put On Your Dancing Shoes (POYDS) dance studio of Crete will hold two performing arts showcases entitled "Behold" on Saturday, May 4. Shows are at Crete High School at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Kentucky Derby luncheon May 4 in Friend

A Kentucky Derby fundraising luncheon will be held May 4 at 11 a.m. at the San Carlo Room in Friend. This is a joint fundraiser for the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store (HATS) and the Friend Historical Society. Attendees are encouraged to wear a hat/bonnet and attend to enjoy mint juleps, a Derby lunch, and style shop by Cumberlands Style Shop. Each will draw for a horse upon arrival. Those who have the horse name which wins the actual race will receive a prize. Proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction held throughout the event will benefit both organization's projects. Admission is $30.

Tacos and Margs Night - May 3 in Friend

The Friend American Legion and Sons of the American Legion are hosting a Tacos and Margs night on May 3 at the Legion Hall in honor of Cinco de Mayo. Food and margaritas will be served beginning at 5 p.m. by free will donation and will be available while supplies last.

The Crete Chamber of Commerce Cinco de Mayo celebration will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 12-6 p.m. in the Crete City Park. The all ages, family friendly event will feature traditional dancers, pinatas and music. There will be a wide selection of cultural craft and food vendors.

WC boys win JCC Invite

The Wilber-Clatonia boys’ track and field team won the JCC Invite on May 2. The girls finished sixth out of 11 teams.

Longhorns, Bobcats run at McCool Junction

The Dorchester and Exeter-Milligan/Friend track teams competed at the McCool Junction Invite on May 2. The Dorchester girls finished second and both the EMF girls and boys finished fourth.

CM season ends in opening round

The Crete-Milford baseball team saw its 2024 season end May 2 in a 3-2 loss to Beatrice in the first round of district play. CM outhit Beatrice 6-4.

A memorial service for Errol M. Wahlstrom will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 205 N. Harrison St., Hallam. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the UCC church in Hallam. Dress casually and jeans are acceptable.
